Ken brought this up in a different topic, but it could be an interesting discussion. So I'll start a thread here.
Homeland Security is an organization that cannot make a profit or a loss. So they project fees based on what they predict the volumes will be.
In this case, Trump has removed a chunk of their budget and give in to ICE. The fee increase is simply the shortfall.
Could Biden, if elected cut ICE's budget. and restore full funding to Homeland Security? Remember, ICE got this money because Trump supporters, LOVE to see people grabbed off the street. You can't go on Facebook without seeing video after video of people being snatched now, a modern day "gestapo".
Remember, the Dems have been very critical of ICE.

WASHINGTON-U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Deputy Director of Policy Joseph Edlow issued the following statement in response to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issuing a nationwide preliminary injunction enjoining fee increases for citizenship and other immigration benefits.
This unfortunate decision leaves USCIS underfunded by millions of dollars each business day the fee rule is enjoined. Unlike most government agencies, USCIS is fee funded. As required by federal law, USCIS conducted a comprehensive biennial fee review and determined that current fees do not recover the cost of providing adjudication and naturalization services. This is nothing new or abnormal. In fact, the fee rule is two years behind schedule, and is a smaller percentage increase than the previous. In a fee-funded agency such as USCIS, this increase is necessary to continue operations in any long-term, meaningful way to ensure cost recovery. I’m sure the Trump Administration has much greater things to worry about right now.
When Biden wins the fees probably won’t increase because a Biden Administration won’t be siphoning off money from USCIS by abolishing the immigration programs that Trump has done to date. Those programs will be reinstated and the USCIS will fall back into its previous homeostasis of funding itself through the fees from before.
Looks like the October 2nd fee increases won’t be going ahead.
