CBP no longer processing waivers at Preclearance?

Matt Fposted 3 years ago

Hi everyone. I had read an article stating waivers can't be submitted at airports anymore, including after the border closure ends. Anyone know if this is true?

Replies (recent first):

I put on our Facebook yesterday about how we checked at YVR on Friday to see if they are accepting waivers. They said no but suggested that we call the Vancouver Consulate. The only good note was that the NEXUS office had a sign that said that they open at 8 Sep 2020 for business. We will check back at that time to see if anything has changed.

Assuming this list is valid, it isn't awful.

Everything is within a reasonable drive, at least for calgary, regina, winnipeg, vancouver. It's further north that is a bit sucky.

In my case --- I have clients in Toronto (so I would do either esafe and come visit them., go to the wineries in Niagara and go do the biometrics), or I would go visit my mom in winnipeg and drive the 1 hour to Emerson....

Problem is... they list all the POEs and their hours, but even when the border is open again to accept these, what's the bet many borders will be like FUCK YOU WE AREN'T TAKING THESE...

Love you all!

@Michelle I always send my clients to Niagara Falls/Rainbow Bridge. (Southern Ontario) Ottawa area Clients could use Kingston/Thousand Islands. Windsor area clients could use Detroit, but they are notorious for pretending they are too busy to take waivers.

No airports won't hurt us as much as other places in Canada, especially out west.

So where will they accept waivers in Western Canada if the airports are out of the question? Anyone have any knowledge about this?

Well then that makes it a pain in the ass if we basically have to go to buffalo lol

@jazzsax1. no, it does not matter that they have fingerprints on file. The fingerprints they take are to check with FBI - it is a criminal record check, same as the RCMP criminal record check. Each time it is required, no matter how many times you have been fingerprinted before and for what reasons.

I wonder as far as biometrics and fingerprints go..... I used to have nexus (before I lost it due to my charge).... so theoretically CBP already has my fingerprints / etc.

Wonder if they will know that and not require me to go to the POE to do the biometrics?

I'm not concerned if I need to. I have clients in Ontario and can day trip niagara for some wine and do the prints, but it would be amazing if they said "Oh shit we already have your prints on file, thanks!"

@Matt, yes, it appears like Airports are going to be out..this is going to be difficult for the bigger centers like I mentioned, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, where people were used to just going to the airport. One more thing to make waivers difficult..John, what will be the closest POE for you to send clients?

Michelle replied 3 years ago   #5

@Matt F you are absolutely right. Its from Homeland Security themselves so it is clear Airports are out.

@Matt, I too would like to see this article, this really is not a problem for me here in Saskatchewan, as Regina International Airport has no US Customs..so my clients have always had to drive 3 hours to the nearest Port of Entry. This is going to be a huge problem for Calgary or Edmonton. I do agree with John, I think that Covid will give the excuse for Airports not to accept paperwork. As it is, Calgary and Edmonton have very strict times and are very limited as to when you can drop off paperwork. I cannot imagine what it is going to be like now, when they re-open...

@Matt

Pearson Airport (Toronto) was closed PERMANENTLY for waivers at one point, and only FORCED to open because of eSafe. The facility they have for waivers would make it difficult but not impossible for social distancing. The problem is Trump cut funding, the staffing has always been an issue at Pearson since Trump. I believe they will NOT open because they want to be closed, and Covid-19 gives them the excuse.

In some places the Airport might be the only viable way to hand in a waiver, so this could be a huge problem.

Can you post the article (or a link) so we can see what we are talking about?
